GROWING VEGETABLES AND SALAD

There are many vegetables and salads that are easy to grow and are not overly troubled by pests and diseases. Many can now be bought as plugs from the garden centre if you do not want to sow them from seed. Try courgettes, French beans, sweetcorn, perpetual spinach, lettuces and rocket. If you enjoy the taste of home-grown new potatoes, but do not want all the hard work of earthing up several times and heavy digging to harvest, you can grow them beneath black polythene.

GROWING HERBS

After the initial soil preparation to provide well-drained conditions, many herbs are easy to grow. If you stick to perennials such as chives, sage, rosemary, thyme, French tarragon and winter savory, the only maintenance required is regular picking to prevent flowering and cutting down in the autumn or early spring to encourage new growth.
